Logan LaPlante gives a very exciting TED Talk on how he “Hacks” his education. Logan is a very well spoken 13 year old who has left the traditional education platform behind him for greener and healthier pastures. From a young age, it seems that Logan has been challenged by his family to consider what he wants to be when he grows up in coordination with his wants to be happy and healthy. Thus Logan asks “what if education was based on making people happy and healthy!” This is definitely not the primary objective of traditional schooling. But I guarantee that if you surveyed a large group of adults and asked them if they liked what they were doing that they would say no and recommend finding something you love at a young age. And this seems all to true. I found myself in this very predicament. I had a great career that I had been in for about 6 years but my heart was not into it. Once I rediscovered my passion for teaching I felt like everything in my life clicked. School definitely did not help me in my journey to finding my career.
Logan makes sure that his education offers him more and helps him discover the world around him as well as what he is passionate about. Logan mixes his curriculum with many hands on workshops, field trips, and internships to bring his studies to life. Logan says that this has helped him discover what he is passionate about and what he wants to do in life. When I ask a student in one of my classes what they want to be, the majority of them shrug and say they do not know. This is a time in life when kids should be excited about the future and realize that they can be anything they want to be. One thing that helped me discover my passion for teaching was service learning that I completed at Miracosta College. It seems that giving people hands on experience is really key to advanced learning and motivation.
