Somewhere Else Plan
Understanding the Struggles Students Face and How to Help
Everyone struggles in life from time to time. Sometimes students will have very bad days and need to get something off of their chest. From time to time students will be asked to go or if they need to go to the planning room which will be located in the counselors office. This will not necessarily be a punishment but rather a time for students to engage in a support system to get them back on track. Our class room is built on a team and family environment and framework so and I want everyone to be the best they can be.
Promoting personal levels of fairness in the classroom are extremely important. This is because as our society continues to become more diverse, various groups will have advantages over others. This incorporates everything from race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, to the white privilege. And as things like these separate people in our society, many encounter and struggle to overcome the effects of a diverse and unequal playing field, which grants certain levels of fairness to certain groups and certain individuals. Thus many children begin their educations at a highly disadvantaged level compared to others. And often it is these students with odds stacked against them, who are destined to fail or meet the very minimal requirements for achievement and success.
Socioeconomic status often plays a very significant role when understanding social justice, diversity, and how societies are shaped and interact. One’s socioeconomic status is a measure of the group and class one and their family belongs to. Often socioeconomic status can be a marker for where a child is at in their education and why. This is because it is it is typically very difficult for someone to “rise above” the limits society has imposed on them and the groups and class they belong to. By understanding this, educators can work to erase or dull the lines, which separate individuals in a classroom or school. As educators understand this, they can push to create inclusive environments that embrace equality through equitable measures. And as educators make this push, they will see that not everyone needs the same things in a classroom and school environment, but rather what they need at a personal level to succeed and prosper.
Somewhere Else Plan Strategies
Ø Sometimes students will have a bad day. When using our “cool down” procedure does not work, students will be asked to go to the planning room to figure out what they need to do to get back on track with the class. The planning room will be the counselors office however it will be called this to prevent students from thinking they are simply being thrown out of class (Villa, Thousand, Nevin, 2010). This is a more productive means for helping students to calm down while working with a counselor to figure out how to move forward.
Ø It is hard to get along with everybody. Sometimes seating arrangments are not ideal for students. Students will always have opportunities to speak to me before, during, and after school. If they are having trouble working in their given seat, arrangments will be made to find them a better location. To avoid students feeling singled out, several groups will rotate in the seating chart.
Ø I realize that many students need extra help to understand coarse material. I want to always make sure that I am available to my students. To offer extra support to keep students on track, I will be in my classroom thirty minutes before school starts on most school days as well as in my classroom for an hour after school. If these times do not work, special arrangments can be made. I want to make sure that all my students have as much support as they need.
