Wraparound Support
The one thing that I want everyone of my students and their families to know is that I am here for them inside and outside of school. I make a strong effort to have hours before and after school to help students who need extra help. Below are several strategies that I will incorporate to make our classroom a supportive environment.
Wraparound Support Strategies
Ø I consider my classroom and students to be part of a team as well as a family. I believe it is my duty to make sure that no student gets left behind. To make sure everyone stays on track, students who do not regulary return their bi weekly reviews with parent signatures or students with repeated issues staying on track will receive weekly phone calls home to better strategize how we can build a student up to increase their performance. No two students are the same and many need extra help further their success. Sometimes students need intensive support to further social and emotional growth (Villa, Thousand, Nevin, 2010). I want to make sure each student has access to such support.
Ø If students in my class need additional support and calling home is not working. I will ask parents to come in for an intervention with myself and a counselor to create an action plan for supporting a progressive path to recovery. “MAPs” which stands for Making Action Plans is a futures-planning process incorporates a support team for students to help further educational gains (Villa, Thousand, Nevin, 2010). Each student is part of our classroom team and family and will not be given up on.
Ø Students will have peer support groups in my classroom that will have a forum online one week and in class the following. Students will fill out a work sheet with several questions asking what material they are having difficulty with as well as what they do and do not like in the class. This will give students a chance to review materials while voicing their opinions.
Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership (Support in the 21st Century).
Sometimes it is difficult for teachers to understand what methods are best to employ to support specific students. Thus, I understand how critical it is for myself as a future educator to continuously seek to improve my skills in the practice of teaching. To do this I will participate in various professional learning communities such as those associated with Cal State San Marcos. This will help me to explore new and creative teaching methods and technologies that will help to improve my students learning experiences. I will also be an active member within online organizations such as edtechprofile.org and iste.org. These organizations embrace educators and educational leaders to encourage the advancement of the effective use of technology within educational spheres. These sites offer future teachers like myself a way to meaningfully connect with peers while sharing the challenges and excitements of teaching. For example, iste.org offers a series of podcasts on their website which delve into many current and emerging issues surrounding education, technology and methods to support students. Podcasts similar to these can also be assigned to students to listen to and reflect on. Here is a web link to a sample response I have created after listening to one of the podcasts on iste.org that is similar to what I would expect my students complete https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7FdeGmZXJJbNmMyYmMwODAtNTI5Yy00NWM3LWIxOGEtOTQ1N2YxZmU5NzRj. Online professional communities such as edtechprofile.org and iste.org push the transformation of education. These sites also encourage educators like myself to continuously improve their methods of teaching. As I continuously realize this, I understand that I must always seek to improve the craft of my teaching while exhibiting leadership to my students, colleagues, and community. Professional learning communities such as those associated with Cal State San Marcos as well as edtechprofile.org and iste.org will help me to continue the development of my teaching techniques, and will help me to gain the knowledge to be able to reflect upon current as well as future digital mediums. This will allow me to keep my class current as well as my students engaged. And thus through effective teaching will come effective learning and support.
